BMW Announces Recall of Models with Twin-Turbo Inline Six-Cylinder Engines

On Tuesday October 26, 2010, BMW of North America, headquartered in Woodcliff Lake, NJ, made public its intent to conduct to recall of 2007-2010 BMW vehicles- sedan's, coupe's, convertibles, sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and sports activity vehicles (SAVs) equipped with a twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engines, all of which feature a high pressure fuel pump and BMW's High Precision Injection direct fuel injection system. This recall includes the 135i, 335i, 535i, X6 x Drive35i Sports Activity Coupes, and the Z4 Roadster sDrive35i. BMW North America has also asked for approval from the California Air Resources Board to conduct this action.

Symptoms of a defective fuel injection system include:

- long-crank engine starting times;
- no-start;
- starting then stalling;
- stalling while the engine is running;
- “Service Engine Soon” light;
- reduced engine performance in a Safe Mode accompanied by a tone; and
- illumination of the “Engine Malfunction” light.

Approximately 130,000 of these cars are thought to be plagued with these problems, and about 40,000 of these cars are expected to require a new high pressure fuel pump.

If you are driving a 2007-2010 BMW vehicle that is on this, and have not yet experienced any of the problems take your car into an authorized BMW dealership as soon as possible to take care of this serious safety problem.

In a separate matter, BMW is also recalling approximately 20,800 of its 2008 model year X5 SUVs with inline six-cylinder engines in order to replace the low-pressure fuel pump.

If you are driving any of the above-listed 2007-2010 BMWs vehicles, and have not yet experienced any of the listed problems, take your car into an authorized BMW dealership in order to address the potential problems.
